Some dreams live quietly in the background of our lives. They’re always there, waiting for the right moment to speak up. For us, that dream was to travel overland through South America, slowly, on our own terms, with the freedom to explore wherever curiosity took us.
For years, life was busy, as the lives of many professionals are. Mafé being a judge and Scott working as an engineer, we focused on our careers, made plans, and like everyone else, we kept putting “big dreams” on hold for “someday.” Then came our move to Florida from Washington State. We had uprooted ourselves with the intention of buying a business and starting a new chapter. But when that business fell through, we were left with a surprising question: What now?
At first, the answer wasn’t obvious. But as we talked about what we really wanted out of life, we discovered something amazing — we had both been carrying the same dream all along. Scott had always wanted to do a big overland trip in South America on a motorcycle, while Mafé had long imagined a road trip from Seattle to Patagonia in a Jeep. Suddenly, our paths lined up perfectly.
We also realized something else: the timing couldn’t be better. We had the financial ability to do it. We didn’t have kids or responsibilities tying us down. And most importantly, we had that nagging feeling that if we didn’t do it now… we might never do it.
So, we started researching. A lot.
YouTube became our nightly TV entertainment. We watched other overlanders share their adventures and realized there was a whole world of people already living the life we wanted.
One of our biggest inspirations was Expedition Overland (XOverland) — their videos showed remote mountains, wild deserts, and winding dirt roads that seemed to lead to nowhere and everywhere. We tuned into overland podcasts, Facebook groups, overlanding blogs, any place where tips and stories would lead us to the answer to that nagging question… should we do it?
The more we watched, the more we knew we wanted that life. Waking up in the middle of nature, far from the noise of cities. Being able to decide on a whim whether to turn left or right. Meeting new people, learning about new cultures, and seeing landscapes we’d only ever dreamed about.
For us, this trip is more than just traveling from point A to B – it’s about turning a dream into reality. It’s about embracing adventure, the challenges we will inevitably encounter, and a way for Scott to reignite his problem-solving talent.
One special part of this journey is how it connects to Scott’s love for working on cars, coming up with ideas and building them into reality. Modifying and tinkering with our car isn’t just practical, it’s a way for him to express his hands-on attitude. This trip gives him the perfect chance to bring that passion to life, making the adventure truly our own.
This is how our quiet dream became a real plan, and Taco Libre our ticket to the open road.
It is the start of our journey, and we can’t wait to take you along with us.
